I would recommend stop using password authentication for root if/whenever possible. You might wan't to consider preventing root logins at all (leaving only ssh access for unprivileged user, who then can `su` to root) Using fail2ban would help to mitigate bruteforce attacks too. Let me know about your exact situation and requirements and I would provide you optimal solution. I can either make appropriate modifications for you or provide you exact instructions so you can tune-up your sshd configuration by yourself (i.e. without letting strangers to access your server) best regards, G.
