FESTIVALS OF PENANG Asia has for long been a land of unexplored mystic and joy and holds an unexplained magnetism in the eyes of the people around the globe. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that locations and places in Asia are fast climbing the charts of popularity amongst the world tourists in general and the westerners in particular. Various places in Asia have a strong historical and traditional relevance apart from the luxuries and facilities of the modern world, and this is a combination that is often spell binding. One such place on the Asian map is the province of Penang in Malaysia which many know as the “pearl of the orient”. The city of Georgetown Penang is a melting point of various cultures the most prominent among them being the Malay, Chinese and the Hindu cultures. The official religion is Islam but the religious freedom is there for all to see. Every ethnic community have festivals which are celebrated with equal vigor and even the tourists are involved in the activities and celebrations. Some of the most interesting festivals and the ones which are followed eagerly by the travelers are the Thaipusam, the Chinese New Year, the nine emperor god’s festival and the Hari raya Aidlifitri. Apart from the unique activities and traditions of these festivals, there are many common attributes to them as well like fantastic cuisines and multi-colored attires. So, what does a tourist do in Penang on these festivals? Well, to begin with they enjoy the colorful festivities; the best part about the people of Penang is that they welcome guests and foreigners to celebrate with them their festivals. This in itself becomes an unforgettable experience. Next on the list should be the delicacies of the cuisines that are present all around. Apart from the fact that Penangites are fantastic hosts one more characteristic is that they love to eat. One can find many mouth watering dishes of origins ranging from Chinese to Indian to local Malaya. Dishes like Nasi Kandar, Laksa, char Koay Teow are a must and even the road side stalls offer dishes that are enough to tickle the taste buds like never before. In addition to this the locations, buildings, architecture and historical places are very exciting to see as they present a distinctive picture of the marriage of two worlds, the modern and the historical, and if you still long for more than there is the option of shopping your nights out.
