The Limits of the Evolution of Female Characters in the Bioshock Franchise

DiGRA 2015
In this article, a multimodal framework is proposed to track the character development of female characters in the Bioshock franchise. Through the analysis, I show there is some advancement in the depiction of female characters in the Bioshock franchise in terms of their increased independence. However, the female characters’ representation is still limited by the male player (character’s) perspective.

Gamers and their weapons: an appraisal perspective on weapons manipulation in video games

Elsevier
In this article, I propose a framework to model the weapon manipulation process of gamers, which encompasses the player's and game's weapon customization. I modify Martin and White’s (2005) appreciation concept from their appraisal theory to understand the players' appraisal (aesthetic evaluation) of their weapon(s) during gameplay. I also integrate Martin and White’s affect categories into Lankoski’s (2012) emotion framework to propose the emotions involved during weapon manipulation.

An Analysis of Open World Player versus Player in LOTRO's Player versus Monster Player

Press Start
This article focuses on the analysis of emergent gameplay, based on a case study of the author's subjective gameplay experience of Player versus Monster Player (PvMP) in The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO). The argument presented here is that although there is a core system of Player versus Player (PvP) which LOTRO shares with other online games, each type of online game has a specific kind of PvP system which attracts players to engage in the gameplay.

A multimodal framework for tracking Sesshomaru's character development in an anime movie

Social Semiotics
In this article, I propose an integrated multimodal framework for tracking a Japanese character's development, that of Sesshomaru, in the anime movie, Inuyasha: Swords of an Honourable Ruler. I explain how the relationship between the language and visual semiotic resources based on appraisal analysis changes from convergence between the language and visuals to divergence, which could be correlated with character development.
