Laser surface rapid solidification of plasma sprayed Ni-Al coatings on steel

IBcast IEEE proceedings

. A metallurgical bond exists between the modified layer and base the base material. Microhardness of the laser processed material increases almost 80%. Increase in hardness is due to fine dispersion of Ni-Al intermetallics. Laser remelting and solidification cause evolution of epitaxial dendritic structure in laser melt zone. The fine solidification microstructure along with martensitic solid-state transformation increases hardness; the latter, in turn provides wear resistance.
