Extensive optimisation of a large MySQL database estate running on RedHat/CentOS Linux. Assessed all aspects of database performance and wrote Perl programs to help with that process. Alleviated concurrency contention bottlenecks in InnoDB, rewrote queries to improve efficiency, analysed and optimised indexes, and improved MySQL and OS level configuration. Achieved overall performance improvement of approximately factor 12x (1200%) without any major changes required to the PHP application stack.

Mar 2018 - Feb 2019 (11 months, 1 day)

Migrated and updated a large database estate (dozens of replica sets, hundreds of servers, hundreds of TBs of data) from bare metal servers in multiple data centers to AWS and self hosted KVM, using ZFS snapshot sending, XtraBackup and mysqldump, depending on what was available and most appropriate for each server. Implemented Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM) for the entire server estate.

Jun 2016 - Feb 2018 (1 year, 8 months)

Stabilised and optimised the database estate consisting of Galera/MariaDB, MySQL and MongoDB server clusters on an on-premise VMware ESXi cloud. Improved run times of a number of regularly recurring tasks from many hours down to a few minutes. Deployed new high-availability PostgreSQL and MariaDB clusters using DevOps methods to improve consistency and reliability of deployments.
