The Kotatsu Group

We solve problems. For projects both large and small, from planning, to development, to implementation, we build solutions that help our clients succeed. SERVICE DESCRIPTION The Kotatsu Group is a marketing research and consulting agency dedicated to helping our clients achieve their vision. We specialize in new product development and launches, with a particular focus on the US and Japan markets. We offer in-depth market research and analysis, strategic advice, Internet services implementation, as well as English/Japanese translation and copy writing / localization services. So whether you have a small localization project or are in need of a full-scale consulting engagement, we're happy to handle your project. "Two are better than one." --Ecclesiastes 4:9 Left and right brains: we bring both sides of the equation to our projects. You need the creativity to craft an innovative approach - that's what will place you apart from and above the crowd. You also need an analytic mind with with the technical knowledge required to implement your strategy. Our team approach gives you both, completing your projects with flair and speed while keeping your organization lean and mean. "Price is what you pay. Value is what you get" --Benjamin Graham/Warren Buffet Set it and forget it - we think big, and we'll help you think big, too. We not only fix your problem, but also scale the solution, leveraging your existing resources to ensure that it's never a problem again. Are we working ourselves out of a job? Yes - that's one way we deliver value to our clients, and it's part of what separates us from the crowd. "In this world you're either growing or you're dying so get in motion and grow." --Lou Holtz A husband and wife team from the US and Japan, respectively, we bring a global perspective to everything we do. History is littered with the products and services of companies who thought they could simply copy and paste what worked in one market to another. Don't be one of those companies! Whether you're planning to introduce a product to the US or Japan, we'll handle the due diligence and lay the groundwork for a smooth and successful launch. "All lasting business is built on friendship." --Alfred A. Montapert What's in a name? The "kotatsu" originated in feudal Japan, where to keep warm during the winter, one would sit underneath a blanket that had been placed on top of a hearth (yes, fires were quite common!). Today's kotatsu is a little more comfortable and a LOT safer, consisting of a heavy blanket laid over a low-table with a heating element underneath. On cold winter days, a favorite Japanese past time is to warm up with family and friends in the kotatsu while enjoying a basket of mikan (mandarin oranges). We invite you to join us in the kotatsu - investing the time and care to truly understand your objectives, and working with you to realize your goals. JORDAN SCOTT Prior to moving to Japan, I served in the marketing group as Global Manager, Market Intelligence at Recall Corporation (A subsidiary of Brambles - ASX: BXB) where I was primarily responsible for gathering information on competitors, customers and the market to inform the overall corporate strategy. That role evolved to include new product development and the design of a number of web-based, inter-active applications. I joined Brambles from the MBA program at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, where I was on full scholarship as a Warren L. Batts Fellow and participant in the "Technology Integration: Generating Economic Results" (TI:GER) program which provided the academic exercise of leading a company from research lab to the market. I was also president of the Entrepreneurship Club. Before attending Georgia Tech I was an Operations Manager for ConAgra International Fertilizer Company, then a member of the commodity trading group and wholly owned subsidiary of ConAgra Foods, Inc. (NYSE: CAG), but now a division of Gavilon LLC. While there, I built the company's deep-sea shipment database, a system still in use today, while day-to-day duties included deep-sea vessel trafficking, logistics and documentation of bulk shipment to the Caribbean, Central and South America. I also developed trade-flow models, as well as daily exposure, P&L and position reports to help juice trade margins. When I'm not at work on your project, you will likely find me on my bike escaping the suffocating traffic of Tokyo in the fresh, clean air of the nearby mountains. If I'm not on the bike, it's probably because I'm hiking through those same mountains looking for the best place to set up a camp site, along with our loyal-but-not-so-outgoing shiba inu. I also play the bagpipes, which ensures I don't end up blending in with the natives too much here in Japan! ;-) CHIORI DAIMON SCOTT I'm the managing editor of Japanese/English translations for a number of web publications and translation services here in Japan. That entails assigning works to various translators, final editing of the submitted product, as well as performing translations on my own. I lived in the US for 5 years before moving back to Japan, and while there I managed logistics for an import/export agency called Novalux America, a subsidiary of... Before moving to the US I served as an operations manager for NYKC, the cruise line division of NYK. Within NYKC I was a member of the hotel team, which coordinated the food and beverage deliveries at each port of call, arranged entertainment and special events, as well as conducted customer research to help continuously improve the passenger experience. I graduated from / Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) with a concentration in Russian, but my Russian these days is pretty rusty! For fun I enjoy jewelry and soap making, and I've recently started to incorporate experience from my aroma therapy certification into my soaps. I also enjoy Ashtanga yoga, spoiling my shiba inu puppy, and of course the shopping and cafe culture in Tokyo!
