Please help me understand how this Python script for Blender works

I'm a Node developer working for a visual artist. He asked me to put together a Python application that allows him to take a 2D image and convert it to a 3D model. I really need somebody to help me understand the algorithm involved in a script I found so I can work with the code according to his specifications. The Github repository is called 2d_to_3d_blender in case you want to do a quick search for it. The back-end I can learn on my own, but I'm sadly very rusty with Python. I also have a few months' experience doing some modeling in Blender. This is coming out of pocket so I would be hugely appreciative for a solid deal but I understand if your time is valuable. Thank you!
