Configure PayPal ipn response

I have setup a php mysql system and need help setting up a script to receive the PayPal response and send order number once paid to a Php page which handles emailing invoice to customer.
At the moment once I receive PayPal confirmation I have to manually enter the order number into a php script which then sends end user their confirmation email using data from MySQL
So I need the following:
1 setup the PayPal ipn or api script.
2. Create sequential PayPal booking reference
3. Send order I'd to email script
