Magento products not showing on frontend

We are upgrading our magento site to 1.7 and our dev site has our products loaded into the back end. They are all enabled, catalog/search visible, showing up in the back end categories but they do not appear on the front end ( have reindexed and cleared cache). Not sure what the problem is, could be a setting that we missed.
