Hi, It will be difficult to switch when one is down when your current server is already running. It would be great if you had drbd + apache + mysql gunning and if you have 2 - 4 interface then via bonding you can make failover cluster and if your primary server is down, your secondary server will be automatically booted. In current scenario when your server is running, you need sync apache and use mysql replication, then right a script for changing dns. Let me know if you are interested to discuss. As system manager for clinical data systems have to setup daily fail-over server in worse case with 100% data. Not sure if you have the database replicated or hosted on another server cluster with replication set. Ideal is to have a load balancer setup ( nginx ), which checks which webserver is up and running, split the traffic 50-50 and if one goes down than should redirect 100% to the live one.. But you wish this can be set, I can present you the best scenario and your choice for the solution.
