Hello,
As a matter of fact I don't know if you deal with this kind of project. I need to solve a problem which is bothering a lot. I will describe it.
I am from Sao Paulo, Brazil. I have a Linux Centos Server, hosted at Codero ([login to view URL]). It has basically:
. Apache
. Dovecot
. Postfix
. Spam Assassin
. Clamav
. Amavisd
, Fail2Ban
. Some other packages
It is an Email Server, that is. it has no Domains, it has only my customers' mailboxes, and so, it is POP3 and SMTP for these maiklboxes.
It always worked nicely, but all of a suddenb, since last week, it presented 2 problems which are becoming serious for me. I don't know if they are related to each other, but I need to solve them as soon as possible.
PROBLEM-1
It affects sending emails. Whenever anyone sends emails from any email account on this Server, it gives that normal message "Connecting to the Server" (or any similar message, depending on the mail client program), delays a very very long time, something above 2 or 3 minutes, and times out. Rarely it sends before timing out. My customers are driving me crazy for this.
Its CPU load average times are quite nice, no overload. It has large Hard Disk, it has 16 GB RAM, that is, it is a very good environment.
I tried many things, I reviewed /etc/postfix/[login to view URL] parameters, I changed /etc/[login to view URL] IPs to many others suggested by my Hosting service, but nothing worked. It has not suffered any updating recently.
This PROBLEM-1 is more critical for me, because my customers can't send emails.
PROBLEM-2
It affects receiving emails. All of a sudden, AMAVISD presented this message:
amavisd dead but subsys locked
When I restart it, within 15 sec to 30sec it crashes again, with the same message. I entered several forums, followed several suggestions, removed and reinstalled amavisd, but nothing worked.
So, in order to not have incoming Postfix queues growing, I commented out this line in /etc/[login to view URL]:
#content_filter = smtp-amavis:[[login to view URL]]:10024
Initially I thought it could be the reason for the great delay in PROBLEM-1, but that delay occurs since 2 or 3 weeks ago, and this PROBLEM-2 only since 1 week ago.
OBS: I have another Server, just like this one, similar box and packages, in the same hosting service ([login to view URL]), and that Server, absolutely similar to this one, works nicely, as this one worked until some weeks ago.

I'm very familiar with troubleshooting linux services in general. I have the rest of today to focus on this if you want a quick turn-around. My approach would be to focus first on the connection timeout issue by bypassing any scanners or other barriers while monitoring the network activity. Once sending e-mails with a simplified approach works, I would start enabling the scanners and other filters one-by-one to see which one may be causing the problem.
For the amavisd error, I would look at the logs and search for a lock file or other resource that may be tied up. If that doesn't work, I would try a simplified config to rule out any configuration issue, then work on restoring full functionality.
Hi, i have been using linux for quite some time and can resolve this issue. It seems to me some storage related problem. I can work to fix this and hope for a long term relationship for further jobs as well. looking forward.
