As it happens, I have quite a bit of experience in this line. In my last full-time position I worked extensively with Freeswitch PBX, at the position before with Asterisk. Working with your in-house Java guy shouldn't be a problem, as I started working with Java a couple of years before Perl (which was some fifteen years ago). Should you have any questions, I would be more than happy to answer.
