The procedure to solve this problem is as follows: 1. Model the inverting pendulum problem by means of Lagrange approach. 2. Find state equations and build state space model. 3. Design PID controller by means of MATLAB. If you are interested I can add graphical representation with SimMechanics so you can see how exactly this system works visually.
