The Government of Québec will invest $ 330 million in the construction of an underground garage for subway trains at the Côte-Vertu station. This garage will replace the first-generation metro cars, and respond to increased traffic and other needs, including a future extension of the Blue Line. The Montreal Transit Corporation (STM) will provide the remaining funds for the project for a total investment of nearly $440 million. “With $ 330 million in funding for the Côte-Vertu garage, the government is demonstrating its interest in public transit and has a long-term vision,” said Laurent Lessard, minister of transport, sustainable mobility, and transportation electrification. “Indeed, the investment announced today ensures adequate maintenance spaces for a fleet of cars sufficient to meet current and future needs, taking into account the improvement in the frequency and regularity of the service, as well as the possible extension of the blue metro line.” Once the construction of this garage has been completed, the STM will be able to respond more effectively to its needs for the reception and maintenance of rolling stock. In addition, the location of the garage will allow STM to improve the operation of the system by adding additional trains during peak hours, particularly on the orange line. The line is also expected to experience strong growth in demand over the next 20 years. “This major investment by the Government of Québec will improve the [orange line] service offer by 25 per cent, support the expected increase in ridership over the coming years, and ensure the growth of the service for the extension of the blue line,” said Philippe Schnobb, chairman of the board of directors for STM. “It is therefore a clear commitment to the development of public transit and the improvement of the customer experience in the Montreal area.” As a result of the new garage, the interval of two minutes, 30 seconds between trains at peak hours on the orange line could be reduced to two minutes. The surface works will mainly take place on the waste ground along the Thimens Boulevard, between rue Grenet and boulevard Marcel-Laurin. They will span a period of 4 years. The work will result in the temporary closure of Côte-Vertu station in the summer of 2018 for a period of 11 weeks. A shuttle will transport users to the Du Collège station, where the STM is planning to build permanent lifts, so that customers continue to benefit from universal accessibility.
