1) Visit HVCC’s library website. Under the “Get Help” heading click on “Cite your sources”. This link will connect you with a guide to help you format your paper in APA style. Print out the first page of the tip sheet.
a. You also need to cite the article you have chosen for your paper in APA style. In other words, do your reference page first.
2) Time to choose a research article. The research project will involve the student choosing a topic from a professional journal that includes a methods section and analyzing that article. The chosen article must be photocopied and handed in as a piece of your part one packet. All topics and articles must be approved by the instructor.
3) The handed in article should be highlighted with the information you believe is important to be added to your research paper.
4) Write a brief one paragraph (4 – 5 sentences) summary of the topic that you plan on discussing in your paper. This must be typed, printed out, and attached to your Part One packet. (Note: this should go into section II of your actual paper)
The paper will be a minimum of four pages and written in APA format. All papers must be typed in 12 point font (Times New Roman or Arial), double spaced, and margins should be no larger than one inch.
Papers will lose 5 points for every day (not class day) beyond the due date that they are late.
No electronic submission of the paper will be accepted.
In addition to the primary article that was turned in for Part One there is a minimum of two additional relevant sources that must be included in support of the initial article. These sources do not need to be handed in, however, they do need to be cited on the reference page. A review of these articles should be included in your Review of Literature section. (see below) These sources do not necessarily need to be from journal articles. Newspapers, textbooks, magazines, and websites will be accepted. You may use your classroom text to support the topic, however, that will not be considered one of the additional sources.
**Plagiarism is taken very seriously at HVCC. Do not copy word for word from a document. A student’s ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse. If you plagiarize in your paper you will automatically get a zero.**
The following is a guideline for the correct format of the paper:
a. Review of literature
i. Supportive resources relevant to the topic.
ii. Background information on issues relevant to the issue being analyzed.
** Note that everything you write needs to be backed up by a source. No opinions in this section without research to back it up. **
II. Analysis of Primary Research Article
a. A summary of the study from the professional journal.
i. Objective of study
ii. Methods section
a. Links the analysis of the primary article with the other research in the field that was cited in the review of the literature.
b. Your opinion can be given here.
a. Be sure to use APA format!
