1. INTRODUCTION
An Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle is an energy efficient power generation system wherein a chemical process namely gasification aims at heating and partial oxidation of coal with Oxygen and Steam to produce synthesis gas, or syngas (primarily hydrogen and carbon monoxide), which is cooled, cleaned and fired in a gas turbine-generator. Oxygen for the gasifier is produced in an air separation plant. The gas turbine exhaust goes to a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), producing steam that is sent to a steam turbine-generator. Power is produced from both the turbine-generators.
Also, this process offers the added advantage of coupling with carbon-dioxide sequestration and storage. Since IGCC has the capability of removing most pollutants from the syngas prior to combustion, it helps to reduce emissions. Research and Development efforts are continuous and one such result is the IGCC which offers a reduction of SOx, NOx and Particulate by about 15-20%, and efficiency of IGCC is expected to go up to 48%. Apart from the fact that it is preferable to implement the IGCC Technology, as it is easy to implement and simple to operate and maintain, which makes this a promising technology for the future power requirements, efficiency improvement can be done by increasing the efficiency of the individual gas and steam turbine efficiencies.
