Coin op (pulse) single use lockers using Arduino and/or Raspberry Pi

One of them is a sanitary napkin vending machine, in which a pulse based coin counter is used. So this project needs a total of 34 i/o pins or 28 pins if you are using an I2C LCD(Raspberry pi has only 28 gpio pins) . This can be done by arduino mega. Raspberrypi has 25pins of GPIO, so I think it's not enough for controlling 12 lockers. Hello, your project could be made as a sequential state machine. You will produce your project as a consumer product (high production and quality) or more like a hobby (arduino will be more than enough)? I think you should get a custom PCB, that is because the arduino or RPi platforms only can handle high loads through a relay circuit (anything bigger than a couple of leds).
