Scenario Your company has been asked to produce a technical specification and quote for a new network system for a charity. The charity sells items made in the 3rd world through a mail order catalogue and retail outlets. The charity has a head office that handles all administration, a warehouse 2 miles away, four retail outlets in the UK and five 3rd world workshops. The head office is divided into departments as below: Administration Director + 2 staff Staff administration, finances & payroll. The accountant will need access to the bank’s system (BACS) for statements and payments (you only need to make a suitable connection available). Purchases 3 staff Stock Purchases/Control & Catalogue preparation. The buyers will need access to the workshops. Stock control will be through a local database. Catalogues are designed locally and sent out to the printers. Sales 5 staff + 2 part time Telesales, Mail order & retail supply. One person deals with the retail outlets. Four staff deal with the telesales and the mail order requests during normal hours. 2 part time staff deal with the telesales in the evenings. Payments are by cheques or credit cards. Technical 2 staff Network/User support & hardware installation, head office and warehouse only. All other areas are supported by local companies. Also responsible for staff training. One person on call out outside normal hours. The warehouse has 3 staff, but only 2 would need access to network. One for entering incoming stock and checking stock levels, the other for getting details of consignments to be despatched. The stock database is held at Head office and needs to be updated in real time. The retail outlets need to be able to send orders and reports on sales to head office. The shops also need to be able to take customer orders and handle credit cards transactions. A local copy of the stock database updated once a day may be useful. The 3rd world workshops need requests for items to be produced. The workshops send details of items being produced and shipments sent. Produce a standard specification for computer systems to be used in each location including current costing. Detail where specifications should be changed for particular tasks and give your reasons. Produce a specification to network all the sites. This should included network hardware, software and communications systems. As the charity has a tight budget ideal and alternative methods should be included with the advantages and disadvantages explained. Include in your report different network topologies that could be used together with your proposed topology. Using your specifications, give ideas where the computer system could be upgraded if the charity wants to expand its operation. Finally evaluate the proposed system.
