Possible areas of exploration:  Exploring the relationship/correlation between buildings their layout and the quality of life of informal dwellers.  Social exclusion/deprivation (between informal dwellers and the rest of the population).  Education (language barriers). Basil Bernstein, a sociologist, distinguished between two speech codes- the elaborated and restricted speech codes.  Crime rates within informal settlements. On the other hand, after looking in depth on the social limitations of these types of dwellings, when researching, I found that within Rio de Janeiro, cultural and social deprivation has moved from being something that is viewed in a negative light to something much more positive. For instance, the showcase of cultural creative vibrancy that exists within these dwellings through the form if arts, music, dance, food or sport, is something that these informal settlements hold over their formal counterparts. To some degree, it could be said that this advantage is only possible through the informal layout of the dwellings and their dense organisation. So far, I’m interested in looking at the informal dwellings of Rio de Janeiro, South Africa and India My aim for this research is to compare the social life of occupants in the wider urban society to the lives of those living in an informal settlement. Firstly I am a South African. Although I no longer live in a informal settlement, I still have good memories of that experience and believe would be well suited to write such a report.
