Your thesis should answer the following questions: How does the artist reinterpret the myth for his/her own times? How has the artist "made the myth his/her own" by extending its meaning? 2nd paragraph: How is the work constructed or planned? Is there a fore, middle and background? (i.e., rule of thirds, lines)? Describe how the work is organized as a complete composition. What figures are depicted? Is there more than one figure in the composition? What are they doing? What expressions do they bear? What action is taking place? What is the setting? Does the image show action or contemplation of the characters? Does the image convey a particular scene from a myth? Does the image start the beginning, middle or end of the myth? 3rd paragraph: Observe the composition of the illustration. Identify some of the similarities throughout the work (i.e., repetition of lines, images). Is there light and dark imagery? Do they conflict? Harmonize (i.e., create balance)? Identify some of the points of emphasis in the work (i.e., light/dark, symbol, icon, allusion). 4th paragraph: what does it mean? Look for symbols such as rising/setting suns, celestial images, mythological creatures, flowers, food, a body of water, or anything else that you may find that conveys meaning. What does/do it/they mean? If the work is not a representation of a myth, compare it with a myth. What mythic influences can you find (e.g., Greco-Roman Parthenon, lightening bolts, etc)? How does it reinforce the meaning of myth? Can you infer any of the four functions of myth (at least one required)? •Mystical: at wonder of it all. Myth allows an impenetrable aspect to a person, place, or thing and creates mystery. •Cosmological: allows one to determine place in the seen and unseen world. •Sociological: supporting and validating society’s beliefs, faith, and perspective given the natural order. •Pedagogical: using myth to teach often with morality, societal norms, and faith based lessons, or how myth can be interpreted as a rite of passage.
