Hi, It was nice to see your job posting and it seems very interesting and challenging as well. But at the same time, its a doable task and it is not something that can not be achieved. I can do this task by employing the template matching approach and we can detect the solar panels installed on the roof tops. For this, the resolution of the images and the distance at which an image is captured is important. If the height from which a certain area is looked at can be restricted at the first stage to simplify the problem and then later on extending the functionality to cover different heights. Please let me know, how you would like to go ahead with the project. You will provide images to find out the location of solar panels or you will provide the access to some map and do it on the fly. I have worked for almost 15 year in the institute of Remote Sensing & Geoinformatics. my main task is classification of land use/land type and estimation of crop yield using satellite image data. the satellite image data we used is MODIS, LANDSAT ETM++. after that i opened my own new company. here i am team manager having well skilled 30 IT programmers. our team is divided into 4 group, that is, window mac os linux desktop application group, Mobile application group, GIS & RS application group, Web application group. Game development group. RS& GIS developer team are all skilled in c, c++, Google map, ARCGIS,postGIS,Flex,JSON, ESRI, QGIS, satellite image processing, algorithm development, PCI, ENVI, ERDAS very well. we have developed various Remote sensing and GIS related projects. and few months ago, i had done solar panel detecting project which is very similar with your project. Based on this experience, we are going to develop your project using pattern recognition algorithm on the Google satellite image the accuracy will be 50~70 percent. after that we will do manually fix. then you can get successfull database of solar panel in australia. thanks hope to work with u Jin

Hi Jeff, I am a electrical/renewable energy engineer located in Melbourne. I'm not an expert in this area (the programming side) however would love to chat with you about this. I am of a number of different pieces of software that have been used to do a bunch of modelling etc. on solar panels output from rooftop geospatial data. my old company did a number of these. i was involved from the side of these projects, what often happened and the structure for them was that there was LIDAR data obtained for an area, and the standard image data, both of these were in ARCGIS software and then processing code was written in python, which is good for scripting in ARCGIS. Dont know how you would get the data from nearmap to do image processing like that, would require downloading all the images from nearmap wouldnt it?
