Concept Design for Instrument Chassis - Phase1

Our company designs electronic instruments. We are currently designing a low volume (20 unit) instrument for a customer who has requested a “nice?? rack mount instrument chassis. After looking at many pre-fabricated instrument chassis we have concluded that most designs are junk and that we can build our own for the cost of the better ones. We want this design to be adapted to 1U, 1.5U and 2U instruments and be able to vary the depth of the chassis using a solid modeler. Phase 2 will follow, in which you will produce CAD assembly model and drawings. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW AND HAVE ACCESS TO PROE/SHEETMETAL OR SOLIDWORKS, THEN DO NOT BID ON THIS PROJECT. Issues: - Production volume here is low, so aesthetics and a quality feel (read that thick metal) are most important. In terms of looks, I want something that resembles an Xserver ([login to view URL]). - I have included a hand drawing, but by no means do you have to follow it. - Front and rear panels are removable, so we can fit different electronics to the chassis. - Read the attached document for more information. ## Deliverables 1. (25%) Drawings of the concept design. This could be an orthogonal or isometric hand drawing. I want to get a feel for what the chassis will look like. The drawing impaired could use a computer. 2. (25%) A rough assembly drawing showing how components are fitted and fastened together. 3. (50%) Answers to questions submitted by me after I have reviewed your drawings. I would imagine these questions to be mainly related to fabrication details. There may be some modification of the design at this stage. ## Platform - ProE/Sheetmetal, Solidworks. MUST KNOW ONE OF THESE SOLID MODELERS. - Should know sheet metal fabrication and fastening techniques.
