Configure "Translate Inline"

The "Transfer inline" function is not working in any browser.
Either I have misconfigured settings or there is possible a small database issue.
I need the function configured (IMMEDIATELY)
The configuration must be such that future magento updates will not remove custom text.
Note: I only require to change text in front end. eg. Customer to User etc in english only.
No translation is required.
