Data Visualization

Develop an interactive data visualization, using a tool like SAS JMP or Tableau, in order to gain demonstrably useful insight into a complex dataset. Alternatively, the visualization might be more akin to a dashboard designed to provide rapid insight into key performance indicators relating to an organization’s business processes (e.g. a department wise analysis of profitability or efficiency). Either way the final design/implementation will be constrained to a single screen view whilst following best practice in terms of visual representation, presentation and interaction • Dataset • Question formulation • Requirements specification • Paper prototype designs • Implementation • Critical evaluation (of both solution and tools) Implementation • Implementation of application in a second relevant tool (e.g. SAS JMP or Tableau) • Implementation of an interactive data visualization presented on a single screen (max 1080p) • Solution comprises at least 2 graph types and 3 separate views and is consistent with the design and requirements proposed in the introduction • Generally correct/effective encoding of data to visual variables • Generally correct/effective choice and configuration of graph types, with little or no overloading within individual views • Working project file(s) submitted in working JMP and/or Tableau format • A critical discussion comparing the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two implementations and tools used • A successful attempt to incorporate relevant computational modelling (e.g. cluster analysis) or statistical analysis into the solution • Explains how views are configured and arranged in a manner that facilitates the task (e.g. ordering of categories as required, related views aligned/positioned adjacently) • Demonstrably effective use of brushing and linking between two or more views that supports either a planned or unplanned task • Demonstrably effective use of local/global filters that supports either a planned or unplanned task • A repeatable, illustrated walk through of how an unplanned, non-trivial insight or ‘discovery’ was achieved using the application. This must involve at least two distinct but coordinated views. • A final reflective discussion on the project process that includes significant insight into personal learning on the module along with the identification of at least one personal development objective relating to data visualization
