We are a Technical Recruiting firm based in Virginia. We have sales reps (SR's) and Recruiters (REC) that are paid commission based on the jobs they fill with qualified consultants. The commission is based on the amount of hours their consultant works and the margin (spread) of that person. Spread = the money made each hour after burden (ie. straight profit). Also, the more consultants the recruiter has working, the higher the spread. As their spread grows, we pay them a higher percentage. (Percentages start at 8%, and go up to 15%.) Ex. REC 1 has a consultant with a $15 spread. He works 160 hours in a month. Our company would make $2400 from that consultant. REC 1's commission would be 8% of $192. Currently, we have to manually calculate all of this each month. We are looking for a custom built tool that allows us to populate recruiters and sales reps, company and consultants, and input spread and hours and have a system calculate commission. We would also like to be able to run reports if possible, such as company spread, individual recruiter spread for hour, week, month, year, etc. The tricky part is the system would have to understand their are different tiers that pay higher percentages. Example, once a recruiter gets to $4000 in weekly spread and his commission percentage goes from 8% to 10%, so now anything over $4000 he is paid 10%. ONce he gets to 5K in weekly spread, he is paid 12% and so on until it is capped. I can give much more specifics and details, but this is the gist of it. We just need a solid developer that can understand our business requirements and put them into a workable program. We do not have Access installed, but if that is the chosen product, we could buy it. Excel or any other tool would work fine. We do want a decent looking interface.

I performed this very project as part of a larger consulting project where I analyzed & researched data reporting; improving operational efficiency while assisting a Medicare Administrator to expand from $120 million to a $245 million dollar company in 45 days. The excel commission calculator I developed was used to determine both compensation and marketing campaign effectiveness based on insurance agent payout by area(or in your case by client). Since this would be created in Excel there wouldn't be a need to purchase Access, thus helping to protect the bottom line.

Hello, I have experience implementing solutions for your exact business requirement. As a data modeler, I have created flexible database structures based on the following business entity hierarchy: Commission (or Tax) Schemes > Premiums > Tiers > Thresholds. I have implemented these resources in a variety of business settings, such as calculating buyer and seller commissions for an auction house and calculating down town property taxes for a municipal government. In both these examples, people were struggling terribly to perform the calculations even though they were using MS Access and Excel, because they did not know how to create the backend data structure that drives the calculations. Once the data structure exists, the actual calculations can usually be created within Access queries as SQL expressions. In more complex scenarios, the calculations require VBA. However, I am concerned that you might have underestimated the complexity of your requirements, especially if you require a user-friendly UI to manage the data. Even though the number of tables required is small, the UI requirements are complex due to the hierarchical structure of the tables; multiple nested levels of forms and subforms are required. My MS Access experience covers everything from complex, multi-user distributed (front end – back end) applications, to quick, disposable, ad hoc utilities. I am proficient in Access SQL and VBA, so I am able to code complex business logic and create very intuitive, easily-navigated user interfaces. I also have extensive knowledge of Access ADP (Access front end, SQL Server back end) applications. Many of my Access databases have been in daily use for years without any serious problems. As a data modeler, I know how to create a data structure that is flexible and able to grow and change along with your business requirements. My Access user interfaces are intuitive and designed for easy, stream-lined data entry. I also have the VBA coding skills to make the user interface as user-friendly as required. Access is also my favorite report writing environment, so my reports compliment the data structure and the user interface. Follow up support for my client is something I take very serious. The manner in which I design and document a project enables me to quickly provide technical support and revisions, even after years of separation from the project. Dear Sirs Even though I am an industrial engineer, my work is mainly related to systems analysis. I have also taught systems analysis and design at Kennedy University. In my opinion, you should hire someone to perform a systems analysis in house for the whole company and the start by developing your commission calculation. You see, just like when building a new house it’s better to have the architect design the whole thing, even if you will start building a single room (everything fits better later on as you keep adding more rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, etc.), the best thing to do is to have a systems analyst perform a systems analysis of your whole company, analysis that will afford solutions to complement and improve yours as well a set the conditions for a smooth transition to a system for the company. A good systems analysis, though, takes time. So a midway solution would be to develop a solution in excel. You will be able to polish details and find issues you don’t foresee now (ge. will the final solution be developed for a single machine, a local area network or the internet?) The above said is the reason why I opted for an excel based solution for this first step of your systems development. Don’t spend time and money in good looking interfaces at this time. Focus on getting the best possible definition of your problem and the best solution to it. Make sure you get the information you need. Once you have used this “temporary solution“ for a while and are sure all your needs are satisfied, then and only then, focus on what your system looks like and, as said before, where it will run. I am at your disposal for whatever you may need, including systems analysis related issues, even when, unfortunately, you will need someone in house to do the job and that will not be me (unless teletransportation becomes available in the short time). I would propose a stand alone desktop application (not requiring Access) but with the ability to export to Excel if required. Also I would suggest it be written in WPF to facilitate easy conversion to web based or mobile devices at a later time (this conversion would not be included in this quote).
