Objective:

The objective of this project is to develop a cost effective digital restaurant menu with a colour touch-screen and built-in rechargeable batteries.

System Description:

This device is to be used as a restaurant menu. Much like a touch screen digital picture frame, customers can browse through food items, which include a picture of each foods as well as a brief description and price. The idea is to allow the customers see the food before ordering it. The menu shall come with a "Call Waiter" feature, such that when the customer is done selecting his/her food, by touching a button on the menu (or a spot on the screen) the waiter will be notified.

Technical Requirements:

1. Lightweight (i.e. around 2.5 lbs including the weight of the battery).

2. Portable with dimensions around 8"(W) x 10"(L) x (less than 1" thick).

3. Tamper proof: The device should be designed such that it will prevent anyone to tamper with it.

4. Colour touch-screen with picture quality resolution (minimum 640 x 480 pixels).

5. Built-in rechargeable battery which can last at least 4 hours of continuous use. Designs with replaceable snap-on rechargeable batteries are acceptable as well.

6. Durable: The screen shall be scratch proof. The device shall be shock proof and withstand drops from at least 3 ft on concrete floor. The device shall be enclosed such that it survives liquid spills and prevents external objects (i.e. dust, food, etc.) from entering its internal circuitry.

7. Capable of playing video clips, images and sound files.

8. Come with sufficient internal memory to store 500 images and 15 minutes of video.

9. Come with a USB port to connect to a computer for communication.

10. Come with software to be installed on the restaurant’s computer that allows the restaurant to define the categories of food (i.e. Entree, Drink, Desert, Appetizer, etc.) and load the associated images/video clips/sounds under each category.

11. A fool-proof Graphical User Interface that allows customers to easily browse through the categories of food and make a selection.

12. Come with a transmitter to inform the restaurant coordinator that the table is ready to order, when customer activates the “Call Waiter” feature.

13. Come with a receiver which can be positioned up to 50m away from the menu and shows the status of up to 30 tables (i.e. if the customer is ready to order).
