Hello, my name is George Bouris. Since this system will be used to "catch" attention, it has to be "shiny". A good combination that will provide it is a RPi with a touch screen. There is a significant variety of touch screens for the RPi, from ~3" to 23". In my opinion you need a 7"-10". The sliding door will probably use a DC motor and 2 limit switches, so a HW interface is needed to drive this motor. My proposal is for the development of the needed hardware to drive the motor and capture the status of the limit switches and the software that will allow the control of the door via the touch screen. I will provide you with a tested and working electronic board (the interface), constructed on general purpose PCB, which an electrician will easily connect to the door. Such a system is powerful enough to handle complex animations (more eye catching) and my intention is to make it completely customizable so that you can easily (through Web interface) change its appearance. The more easy way is using an Android Tablet with a Wifi Relay. The tablet (7” or more), will have and app simulating your hand. When the user touch the screen the app will send a command to the wifi relay that will activate the motor from the sliding door. Given the fact that also the system need to close the door after the users enter, we need to add some sensors to avoid the door close until all people enter, or we can add a push button or another tablet, or even you can control it from any device that can connect to wifi. The wifi relay can be made using a low cost system that use a chip called esp8266. The wifi relay will need be mounted in a PCB. First I need to investigate the existing doors to get a better understanding about what are the things that exists in the market and how to make them fit in your project.
