Polyhydroxybutanoate (PHB) was initially discovered in 1925 by French biologist Maurice Lemoigne from Bacillus megaterium. PHB was initially extracted from microorganisms such as the Alcaligenes eutrophus bacteria, when placed under stress through nutrient starvation. Biosynthesis of PHB starts with condensation polymerisation of acetyle-CoA to give acetoacetyl-CoA which is later reduced to hydroxybutyryl-CoA. These are all products of carbon assimilation (similar to starch/cellulose) and were originally which is used as energy storage when other sources were not available. The latter is used as a monomer to create the polymer PHB[1].
