Count the number of rebars in section image by C++ or Python

I'm familiar with Python and already did some image recognition projects. Proposed approach in this case: 1) apply suitable filters to enhance contract of rebars 2) guess initial position of rebars by detection of gray spots 3) apply genetic algorithm to optimize number, positions and intensity of spots to best fit the image. 4) After stagnation of error between model and image return number of rebars.

Hello, I have good experience in python and certain experience in image processing with MATLAB and python. (I can send my assignments on request). If the lighting conditions of rebars do not vary greatly, this does not look like a complicated task.
