Demonstrate whether or not cancer rates are on the rise

I need to understand the rate of cancer since before World War 2 until current day. It is disputed whether cancer rates are on the rise or not, or perhaps people are just getting older and doctors are getting better at diagnosing cancer. I would like to have a geographic view (ie. countries) and split by western world vs eastern world. There will need to much thought put in regarding adjustments needed to make to understand the relationship between time and cancer rates. This will likely get published so needs to be statistically valid and proven with the utmost scrutiny and thought. If I am happy with the work, there is an opportunity to work on a much larger project. Data sources, background, methodology, results, testing, findings, summary plus whatever else in relevant should be included.
