18+ only! $20,500 USD in Total Prizes! - Ideas needed to automate grocery retail checkout process (participants must be 18+) BACKGROUND/OVERVIEW SRC Indonesia is developing the largest grocery retail network with independently owned mom-and pop’s retail outlet in Indonesia by providing education, network and digital platform to empower the traditional retail outlet competing the new era. We are operating in a fragmented retail market of more than 3.5 million retail outlets where most of them are small mom-and-pops grocery outlets. These grocery outlets are similar to the Kirana stores in India or the Karyana stores in Pakistan. Understanding consumer demand and preference through retail selling out data is key in the consumer-package goods (CPG) business. However, in a market still dominated by independently owned traditional stores, acquiring this data is always challenging. We directly covered around 1 million of these outlets with 125K of them are the top tier weighted retail outlet. These outlets are the ones that we focus the most and thus key for the CPG brands to monitor the selling out data. Whilst these outlets are the ones with the highest turnover, they are spread across the archipelago from urban, sub-urban to rural areas. SCOPE SUMMARY The scope of this contest will ask you to think about how to use technology/digitalization to automatically collect retail selling out data or Point of Sales (POS) data from traditional retail grocery stores. OBJECTIVE: To conceptualize solution (application/technology/AI/cloud/IoT) that can AUTOMATE check out process of purchased products in the traditional retail store and can indicate options for shopper to make payment with retailers and receipts can be printed out or send to email. The solution would also allow AUTOMATE tracking, either real time or on periodic basis, and capture retail transaction/selling out of (CPG) products, while considering the fact that cellular (at minimum) 3G networks are widely available in the country, although sometimes connection speed and consistency might still be a challenge. Please also consider that we have developed and launched a free of charge mobile application point-of-sale (POS) system for any of the retailers in the network to use. However, without the automation capabilities, the usage of the system is still minimal. Game changing technologies could be, but not limited to artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, cloud, mobile application etc. Solution can include motivational factor(s) such as point-reward mechanism, but not based on fee-based per transactions due to anticipated low value but high transactional volumes. The contest will be launched on 25th September 2020 and will be closed on 25th November 2020. Then the judges will be announcing the winners around 4 weeks after the contest closes. Updates will be provided in the public clarification board. REQUESTED DELIVERABLES We invite you to contribute your idea of a potential solution through identifying 1-3 technology solution that can automate tracking in the outlets that will ultimately improve the current state. We will NOT accept submissions that focus on the optimization of internal processes and ways of working within the company. Instead we want you to think about tools and solutions at our retail partners and how technology can play a role in changing the way the industry understands retail dynamic in traditional grocery market. The submission should clearly include: 1. Clear objective 2. Steps for Business transformation 3. Technologies to use 4. Estimated solution development cost The responses shall be written in English and be submitted in .pdf format. This can be either a (max 2 page) PDF report or (max 3 page) PDF slide deck presentation. PRIZES 1st prize: 9,000 USD 2nd prize: 6,000 USD 3rd prize: 3,000 USD *10 runners up prizes of 250 USD *Only runner up entries that fit our criteria will be awarded the runner up prize. JUDGING CRITERIA Reports and presentations will be judged based on the following criteria: - Explanation of the solution - Functionality - Feasibility - Affordability and scalability - Adoption and implementation - Creativity ... The number of winners who just toss out "Trained Object Recognition AI" in some form or another is hilarious. Where do you get your data set? What happens when a label changes or gets torn? What happens when two brands look similar? I should have just pretended that ML was easy. I guess ignorance is bliss (for the winners).

Uhmmm, I don't know Rick, all the ideas are similar, even my idea includes several of the winners, and the winning idea goes from being something practical to something very long-term since it involves developing a system of object recognition in multiple angles and reflections and margins of error that does not seem very applicable especially for the high range of products and novelties, this seems strange, it is very expensive and includes manufacturing equipment and sending it to each small store, it does not make sense, and yet it will not offer trust in customers. since they will be recording you, one thing is to record the product or the barcode as I put it, and another very delicate thing is to record everything, I don't know .. uhmmm ..
