Contest Brief

I am on the verge of submitting an article to a peer-reviewed journal and want my illustrations redrawn by a professional. I am including a pdf that shows what I created and excerpts from the paper which reference the illustrations. The journal is academic, so the illustration work should not be elaborate. At the suggestion of commenters this may be appropriate for an artist with infographic experience.

The numbering shows that there is sequence and that there are alternative pathways. If there is another way to convey that information I am open to ideas.

Employer Feedback

“Eliana does excellent artwork. I was less than ideal as a project manager, so I think the delays on our project were at least partly my fault. If clear expectations are provided regarding the timeline and how to communicate effectively then I am confident Eliana will handle your project well. ”

I am sure that I was not very skillful at communicating in my briefing; I am not practiced in working directly with artists. This is why I chose the contest format. Since I am not skillful I am better off seeing the interpretations of many artists rather than blindly hiring one at a time. The possibility of not winning is in the nature of contests, so I suggest that you take that into account before you enter another one, Namal P. It is also in the nature of a platform like freelancer.com that unskilled people like me are going to use it.

I have uploaded excerpts from the paper that refer to the illustrations to give you deeper insight into what is being portrayed.

I also encourage you to vary the layout of the elements in the delivery system diagram. The instruction pump idea leads to the stuff that goes from the instructor's head into the kids heads then gets regurgitated by the kids onto tests. My original concept was implying that the kids were being treated like robots and they were spitting out ticker tape. I suspect the connections between the different elements could be illustrated in others ways, but I was limited in being able to draw anything else in a convincing way. Perhaps, the ticker tape could take the place of the arrows? If you can come up with something simple and clear, I welcome creative changes that still communicate the ideas.

The delivery system might be done in a circle to more clearly show that it is a cyclical process.

Another challenge that you can be creative about is in the set that leads to the disengaged student. The second panel shows a child playing with a car and track. What is essential there is that the child has some expectation about being in school that is then different from how school actually works. If the school does not allow that child to do that activity then the child's map of what school should be is violated. When a school operates without regard for a child's inclinations then the child disengages from the schooling process. If you can come up with a better image of the child's original expectation that will not be met, I welcome it.

I encourage you to consider the text and creative ways to convey the fact that there is not only a sequence of events, but alternative pathways through those events designated by the 2a/b & 4a/b panels. Also, the connection between the elements in the first figure being reused in the later figures indicates the continuity between the ideas.

I don't know enough about styles to specify. I suspect 2-D for simplicity. Since the publication is a peer-reviewed academic type journal it should not be elaborate.
