Create four 2 minute ambient soundtracks to accompany existing video animations

  • Status: Closed
  • Prize: £700

Contest Brief

I have four 2 minute CG animations that show a stylised representation of the Antarctic and Arctic regions (2 for each region). Accompanying each animation are two characters who discuss important topics, and the top-down animation is synchronised to their discussion, so that when they mention something (eg. the dwindling albatross population) we see animated albatrosses dying. Each chapter covers a different topic.

The four videos are here: [login to view URL]

I need simple, non-obtrusive background ambient sound design - NOTE: NOT MUSIC! - for all four videos, precisely synced to them. It is crucial that the sounds happen at the exact time they are seen in the animation. The sounds must not be distracting, loud, or disruptive and should not get in the way of the discussion the characters are having. Instead, it should help viewers understand what is being discussed (ie. when they discuss shipping vessels, we should hear a distant shipping vessel fog horn). A general background level of sea ambience should be heard throughout. In some stories, we see buildings being created, or oil rigs appearing - appropriate sounds for these should be found and used. You are responsible for clearing all license use of library sounds, so it may be preferable to use public domain sound libraries (but that is your choice). You must be able to provide me with all licensing details for sounds you've used.

The contest is to provide all four sounds as 2 minute stereo .WAV files. You can send compressed MP3 versions, as long as upon winning you can send the fully uncompressed versions. Ideally, I'd also like the multitrack project that you used to build the audio in, too (it doesn't really matter what software you used, as long as it is reasonably common).

All submissions should be sent to [login to view URL] and a corresponding entry should be submitted to Freelancer. Please be sure to label your file submissions with your Freelancer username so I can track people down.

I'm happy to answer questions and clarifications as we go along, however the deadline is tight - Ideally I want to pick a winner before the 5th September please.

Hi - Yes I did review your entry (even though you didn't use the supplied the Dropbox link). Your entry was very good - one of my favourites, unfortunately I had to pick one. Your entry came in very very close second place.

Thanks for letting me know, I was very curious. If you're willing, I'd appreciate it if you could tell me what I could have done better, for future reference. I've spent 10 years making electronic music, but have only recently begun trying my hand at this kind of work, and any feedback is immensely useful.

Thank you for making such an effort. Your entry was very good (there was only a few that stood out). The quality of your submission made it very hard to pick a winner, and unfortunately I could only pick one. Yours was in my top 3 favourite.

Hi! Thanks for your feedback, I thought you'll choose the winner based on short demos, so I did'nt make other 3 chapters. It seems that you're waiting to all 4 videos finished, right? If so I'll continue working at other 3 chapters as fast as I can.

Hi Tim. Thanks for your submission. This is a very strong submission - you've judged the levels and type of effects well. The sinking ship at the end is okay but could be slightly more dramatic. Also, there is only one chapter so far (although I suspect you know this).

This is a very strong submission. I would say there are only a few issues, mostly to do with the source sounds (eg. you have used countryside birdsong, which is obviously out of place). However, your sync is very good and you've judged the levels about right.

    Good day
I realise you are not looking for music, but are you catagorically against having any musical elements at all? A well placed soft arpeggio can really drive the point across that "learning is happening now!" and provide a sense of cohesion. It would, however, depend on the target audience. Can you provide any more context as to where and how the videos will be used?

Also, to reiterate Tim S.'s question below, will the final video be using different camera angles? Close-ups of objects require slightly different treatment to distant shots.
    Thanks,
    AJ

I see - I'm trying to do what I can in the time allotted, but if I can only complete some of the clips to your satisfaction, would you / could you hypothetically accept that submission as the winner and withhold payment pending the final submission? Trying to figure out if sleep is in the cards for tonight.

Hi, thanks for the entry. I would say the individual sounds are quite repetitive and basic. I was hoping for something more subtle. You also don't appear to be ramp- or cross-fading sounds so the edits are very harsh. Good luck!

Hello, as you have mentioned you need the project completed before the coming 5th. Could you please extend the contest till the 4th. It would be a bit difficult to complete all the videos in 13 hours. Thanks.

Hi. I had wanted to run it until the 4th but Freelancer doesn't let me. They are forcing me to run it only for 24 hours, or charge me extra money to extend it. If there are no good results after the 24 hours, I will definitely extend however.

Sure - here's the shooting script as a PDF. It has animation notes which may be slightly out of date, but the words spoken by the characters should be correct. https://www.dropbox.com/s/6cp1ixsl16pqws2/Microsoft%20Word%20-%20180704r1%20Animation%20Script.docx.pdf?dl=0

Hi! I need a little but important explanation on a first video: what is appearing at the coast at 0:32 - is it like beach chairs or is it a people, passengers from ship or maybe anything else? And there is 'Player 1-4' written on the circle. Is'nt it camera angles for final CG render? If so I need to know should I work with panoram of sounds (like ship passing from left to right) or not?

0:32 - They are cars offloading from the ship. The final view is as you see it in the video: top down. The Player 1..4 labels are because this is actually turns into an interactive game after the video. You can work in stereo field, and assume left speaker is the left side of the table, right speaker for right - but this isn't essential.

Hello. I am not an interested party in this contest (i'm not a musician), but if you do not find a suitable artist in such a short time, I can help you in this problem (i can talk with some of the familiar to me and well-known US musicians in this style).

I had actually wanted the contest to be 2-3 days, not sure why Freelancer forced it to be 24 hours (and expect me to pay more to extend it). Bit annoyed with Freelancer for doing that, to be honest.
