Contest Brief

I'm looking for an illustrator to create the main character (superhero) for me based on the information below. The winner will be offered continued employment developing the characters, scenes and comic book art. They will also get full illustrative credit in all publications (both printed and digital versions). I'm writing the script for a new comic book superhero called 'The Iron Outlaw'. I have attached samples of what the armour looks like and examples of comic book characters that have elemental armour (psychokinetic) abilities. The magical armour is based on the Australian folklore legend Ned Kelly's armour he wore when he battled police back in 1880 (to learn more about Ned Kelly visit http://www.ironoutlaw.com/history/). I also aim to produce a range of merchandise which you will be involved in designing, which you will be paid and credited for. Potentially, it may become a TV series or movie. Here is the synopsis:

The story line follows Tom Gunn, a seemingly inconsequential 23 year old university student majoring in Australian history. As assistant night curator at the Old Melbourne Gaol helping to organise the 150th Anniversary of Ned Kelly's Capture, Tom decides to wear the famous armour of Ned Kelly little realising the outcome. Struck by lightning Tom wakes dazed and confused, and with no sign of Australia’s most famous armour! Valued at over 100 million dollars, Tom is accused of theft and is now on the run from the police. Cornered at a train station he makes a break for it across the train tracks and gets hit by a forty carriage freight train! The train derails but Tom escapes. Seems the armour hasn’t vanished entirely. When it was struck by lightning the armour was absorbed into his body. At times of peril these new psychokinetic abilities allow Tom to instantly manifest Ned Kelly armour. Once formed it creates a psychokinetic shield that making him indestructible while bestowing upon Tom super strength... Meanwhile, in central Australia, an ancient evil stirs under the weight of it’s primordial tome, Uluru (Ayers Rock). Cracks have appeared in it’s prison thanks to recent underground atomic bomb tests. Buried for over a millennia, this obliterator of human life now has a new food source ... Six and a half billion of them! Can Tom Gunn come to terms with his new found powers in time to discover a way to defeat the coming Darkness?

The armour is central to the story as it ties the modern day character Tom Gunn to the history of Ned Kelly in 1880 and the impending battle against the Serpent. I envisage the hero will have the ability to conjure up weapons (hand guns - like six-shooters - and rifles based on the 1880s) using the same ability as the armour. The projectiles will be psychokinetic based so can rip through practically anything as they're pure 'thought energy'. Once Tom Gunn learns the extent of his powers he will be able to call up the weapons similar in style to how the 'Green Lantern' does.

So, in summing up I need the armour to manifest in a more spiritual/force field style and not as stand alone physical armour - think more metaphysical armour! The original iron armour has been absorbed into his DNA and so will appear more as a glowing barrier of force (something like crackling energy/lightning). While the samples I supplied are of Ned's 1880 armour you can modernise/evolve the suit as you see fit. Remember, it doesn't have to be defined/outlined like an Iron Man suit as this isn't made from metal, it's more psychic so it can flow/ebb/alter/change (similar to Green Lantern's ability to summon shielding from his Ring via his mental/telepathic powers).     This is an interesting project, if only i'm good at illustration of characters, I have a lot of concept in mind. The only thing i don't like about your story is the lightning strikes a person and turns him into a superhero cliche. Good luck!

      Please, we are all exposing our ideas in the contest. It seems to me a lack of respect to the other contestants, it is a competition and as such we must all compete under the same rules. I know that you do it to protect the intellectual property of your drawings, but it is unfair to the rest of the participants. I expose my free ideas so that everyone can see them, but I respect that we all have to present our ideas WITHIN the contest, in any case you can "seal" your entry so that nobody else sees it.

      As 'The Iron Outlaw' will be competing directly with comics from Marvel, DC, and Image I am most definitely after a character that represents the best of these publications in terms of style and colour.

    I'm interested in your project, I want to know what features you want for tom, hair color, eyes, thin, brawny body type, ect. About the armor I get the idea, I've seen some images of lightnings and I think the force field could be purple or maybe you want in red, I really want to know

    So I need to clear up one main thing. I have a problem visualizing the armor from your description. You want the manifested armor to look like the original Ned Kelly armor or do you want it to be upgraded or indifferent.
